IN OUR VEINS: The Paintings of Amy Guidry
To experience Amy Guidry’s series “In Our Veins” is to be treated to a vision, one in which a distinctly Western, distinctly American landscape, typically so stark and barren, is suddenly and surreally tenanted by a menagerie of viscera and animate remains. We find ourselves transported to a realm in which the borders between plant, animal, and man are blurred, conflated, and ultimately removed for free range, all beneath the kiln-fired colors of an immense and open sky. Yet in this desolation we find fertile ground for interpretation, each painting as rich as a dream in analytic possibility, too sharp to be real, yet too real to be forgotten.
