Rarely does one consider something as quotidian and banal as the work-week commute to be fertile ground for fine art – the ache of exhaustion, the numbness of routine, the grinding frustration of public transportation. Then again, rare is the artist with the acuity of vision to find in that Sisyphean chore moments of true meaning and beauty. Katherin McInnis is one such artist, and with nothing more than an iPhone and a discerning eye, she has captured those moments in a florid bouquet of texture and tincture. Taken on public transportation in the outer boroughs of New York, her series “In Transit” pays reverent homage to the parts of the city most commuters choose to blithely ignore, reveling in a crepuscular light that is diminished, but hardly subdued.
